FAMILY HISTORY FORUMS

 Family History Forums are here again!

 

Starting on November 10, 2020, Family History Forums are resuming via Zoom! These are informative presentations and discussions regarding various genealogical topics and are partnership programs between the KDGS and the Okanagan Regional Library. 

They are free to attend and open to all, but, you must pre-register. Go to the ORL Events Calendar, https://orl.bc.ca/hours-locations/kelowna, find the Family History Forum events (under Adult events, it will be posted closer to the date). Once you register, a 'Zoom invite' will be sent to you via email. The Family History Forum will be from 6:30 - 8:00pm

Our November topic will be, Mustering Up Military Records – please join us!!

 The December 8th FHF will be, Death records: what are they, what will they tell me, where do I find them?

Join us for an evening of Genealogy learning and sharing at our monthly Family History Forums!  These are free events hosted by the Kelowna & District Genealogical Society in partnership with the Okanagan Regional Library. 
We meet from 7-9pm in Classroom 2 located on the second floor of the downtown Kelowna Library.  No admission fee – no registration necessary!  All who are curious about Family History are welcome!

Tuesday, October 22: Beginning Genealogical Research: New to Family History Research? Here’s what you need to know to successfully discover YOUR family history.

Tuesday, November 26: In Search of Military Ancestors: Learn about what is available online and elsewhere for your Canadian, American and UK soldier ancestors. We will concentrate mainly on the First and Second World Wars but also review some datasets for other wars and military engagements.

Tuesday, January 28: Tools for Putting Your DNA Results to Work: Learn about some of the great tools, software and websites to help you get the most out of your DNA tests. DNA Painter, Ancestry’s Through-lines, etc. will be featured.

Tuesday, February 25: Digitizing, Storing and Displaying Your Family Photos: Do you have a suitcase full of old family photos? We will give you some ideas for preserving and sharing these with your family. Tips for scanning and organizing originals plus ideas for incorporating them into your family history will be discussed.

Tuesday, March 24: The Canadiana Website: Discover this ever-growing treasure chest of digitized Canadian historical records and publications.

Tuesday, April 28:  Finding Your Family Using Social Media: Facebook, Instagram, Blogs, Pinterest and other social media sites can put you in touch with long-lost family, answer your questions about genealogy, locations your ancestors lived in, DNA and so much more. Learn more about using these powerful tools in your genealogy.

Tuesday, May 26: People are Dying to Get In! Cemetery Records Online: Learn about the many free and subscription websites hosting cemetery records and grave-marker photos.

Tuesday, June 23: DNA Q&A: This is your chance to find out more about DNA testing, share your stories about DNA finds and learn more about this exciting genealogy tool.
